Hiking in the Alpine pastures
Some of the hiking areas in Lans-en-Vercors and in other towns across Vercors Regional Nature Park also serve as summer grazing pastures for thousands of sheep. Pastoralism is an ancient practice that numerous families in Vercors still make a living from.
Since the wolf made a return to Vercors, the herds are looked after by guard dogs (often Pyrenees mountain dogs, locally known as the Patou). Make sure you give the herd a wide berth and stay calm to let the dog identify you.
